The Farmstead

What the heck is a "farmstead"?

A "farm" is an agricultural operation with the goal of making a profit (which is great, farmers have bills to pay too!).

"Homesteading" is a style of self-sufficiency; a family raises plants and animals for their own use throughout the year.

A "farmstead" is a mixture of the two, usually involving producing enough food for the family, and growing extra to provide some income. Most farmsteaders also have jobs off the farm (including us, for now!).

Our Farmstead

We both grew up spending time on farms, and it made an impact that has followed us through our adult lives. When we ended up with a few acres on the river just outside of Pine Falls, Stephanie started a vegetable garden (which quickly quadrupled in size), picked up some chickens, and we were hooked! Friends and coworkers loved the gifts of produce and eggs (and the occasional bottle of crabapple wine from the trees in the backyard), so we decided to expand our efforts out into the community.

Currently we have 12 hens, one young rooster named Jason, a pretty sizeable vegetable garden, and a 20x30 greenhouse full of heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. We hope to expand into a few pigs and some broiler chickens soon!
